A high-refresh 1440p gaming PC built from the r/buildapc consensus parts in October 2026 pairs a Ryzen 7 9800X3D with an RTX 5070 Ti 16GB, the build the Reddit-consensus hub calls the strongest 1440p high-refresh combination. Per Gamers Nexus' RX 9070 XT review, which tests the 5070 Ti alongside it, the card averages 187 fps in Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail at 1440p Maximum and 130 fps in Dying Light 2 at 1440p High. The GPU is the line that moves the total most: Tom's Hardware's tracker listed the RTX 5070 Ti's best U.S. price at $1,119 against a $749 MSRP on September 28, 2026 (Tom's Hardware). The live total below adds only the parts with an Amazon price read in the last 24 hours. A part without one is named next to the total and is not counted in it, so check that note before you treat the total as the cost of the whole PC.
Build cost, : at Amazon prices read in the last 24 hours, the high-refresh 1440p build totals $3015.35 for 8 parts. Each part is priced and linked in the tables below; prices may vary.
This page is the high-refresh 1440p tier of the Reddit-consensus gaming PC build, on its own URL so the parts, the total and the frame rates for one target sit in one place. It sits between the 1440p build, which uses a Radeon RX 9070 XT, and the 4K build, which uses an RTX 5080. The 1080p build follows the same format. What the RTX 5070 Ti delivers at 1440p, and against the RX 9070 XT
The 1440p and high-refresh 1440p tiers share most of their parts; the GPU is the difference. All rows below come from one source, Gamers Nexus' RX 9070 XT review, which ran both cards in the same suite, so the columns compare like with like.
| Game | Preset | Resolution | RTX 5070 Ti avg fps | RX 9070 XT avg fps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail | Maximum | 1440p | 187 | — |
| Dying Light 2 | High | 1440p | 130 | 118 |
| Dragon's Dogma 2 | Maximum | 1080p | 151 | 145 |
| Resident Evil 4 (2023) | Prioritize Graphics | 4K | 107 | 103 |
| Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail | Maximum | 4K | 97 | 68 |
| Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty | Ultra | 4K | 50 | 53 |
Source: Gamers Nexus; the 4K Resident Evil 4 figure for the 5070 Ti is from Gamers Nexus' RTX 5070 Ti review. "—" means the review states a lead (34% in this row) but no 9070 XT figure.
Two things decide whether the 5070 Ti is worth its premium over the 1440p build's RX 9070 XT. In raster games the two are close: Gamers Nexus describes Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p Ultra as "basically tied" (the 9070 XT averages 109 fps there), puts the 5070 Ti 5% ahead of the 9070 XT's 83 fps in Black Myth: Wukong at 1440p High, and has the 9070 XT ahead by 5.8% in Cyberpunk at 4K. With ray tracing on, the gap opens. In the same review the 5070 Ti leads by 16% in Dying Light 2 with RT at 1440p and by 23.5% in Cyberpunk 2077 with RT Ultra at 4K. It is also the more efficient card: 0.73 fps per watt in Final Fantasy XIV at 1440p against the 9070 XT's 0.45.
So, for a 144 Hz or faster 1440p monitor: lighter and older titles clear the refresh rate on the 5070 Ti at native resolution, and the heaviest current games need DLSS to get there. That holds at this tier too.
Why each part
CPU — Ryzen 7 9800X3D. At high refresh rates the CPU sets the ceiling sooner than at 4K, which is why this tier uses the X3D chip the 1440p build treats as an upgrade. It tops the CPU-bound charts in TechSpot's review, and PassMark lists a CPU Mark of 39,927 as of September 2026. The 9850X3D in the 4K build is 2–3% faster in most games per Club386; buy whichever has a current price and costs less.
Cooler — Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE. X3D chips ship without a cooler, and a dual-tower air cooler is the consensus default for a 120 W part.
GPU — RTX 5070 Ti 16GB. The consensus card for high-refresh 1440p, for the ray-tracing and efficiency leads in the table above, plus DLSS 4. This list names the GIGABYTE Gaming OC model; any RTX 5070 Ti performs within a few percent, so the cheapest one with a current price is a fair swap. Check its length against the case.
Motherboard — MSI B650 Gaming Plus WiFi. B650 supports the X3D chips and DDR5-6000 EXPO. A single-GPU build does not need X670E's extra lanes.
Memory — 32 GB DDR5-6000 CL30. Still the consensus spec. Per Tech Insider, 32 GB kits ran $429–$499.99 in late September 2026 because memory makers moved capacity to HBM for AI accelerators. That makes memory the second-largest line here after the GPU.
Storage — Samsung 990 Pro 2TB. Gen4 at 2 TB, the floor the consensus sets once a library of current games is installed.
PSU — MSI MAG A850GL 850W. 850 W 80+ Gold, ATX 3.1, with the native 12V-2x6 cable every 50-series card uses. Use the native cable rather than an adapter.
Case — Fractal Design North. A mesh-front ATX mid-tower with two 140 mm fans. Fractal lists 355 mm of GPU clearance, or 300 mm with a 360 mm front radiator (Fractal Design). Retailer listings give the GIGABYTE card's length as about 340 mm, so this build keeps air cooling up front. More options are in the PC case buying guide.
Step up or down
- Raster-only, lower total: the 1440p build swaps in a Radeon RX 9070 XT and a Ryzen 7 7700X. Per the table above it is close in raster and behind with ray tracing on.
- 4K or the highest refresh rates: the 4K build moves to an RTX 5080, which led the 5070 Ti by 15% in Final Fantasy XIV at 4K (112 vs 97 fps) per Gamers Nexus.
Who this build is for
- Yes: 1440p monitors at 144–240 Hz, players who turn ray tracing on, and anyone who wants the build the consensus hub lists first.
- No: a 60 Hz 1440p monitor (the 1440p build costs less and gets there), or native 4K at high frame rates in the newest games.
