Manufacturer description

The Seagate Backup Plus Portable 5TB gives you room for roughly a decade of photo libraries, project archives, and game captures in a brushed-metal shell small enough for a laptop bag. It connects over USB 3.0 with the included cable, no external power brick and no driver install, so it works as a Mac external hard drive or a Windows backup drive straight out of the box. Seagate's bundled software handles the routine part: one-click backup when you plug in, or scheduled daily, weekly, or monthly runs that you set once and forget. The package also includes a one-year Mylio Create subscription…

SpecPicks Verdict

SpecPicks scored Seagate Backup Plus Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD using a rating × review-volume × price-fit model applied to published specs and reviews across the external storage category. Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Seagate Backup Plus Portable 5TB work with a Mac?

Yes. Seagate lists it for both Mac and Windows over USB 3.0. Mac users who want to run Time Machine should check Seagate's listing for the current reformatting steps, since factory formatting can vary by batch.

Do I need a power adapter or a second USB cable?

No. It draws power over the included USB 3.0 cable, which is why it works as a laptop hard drive with nothing else in the bag.

How much of the 5TB can I actually use?

Less than 5TB. Seagate states outright that available storage capacity may vary, which is normal for drives advertised in decimal terabytes versus how operating systems count.

What warranty comes with this drive?

A two-year limited warranty is included, and the retail package is listed with a two-year Rescue Data Recovery Service. Confirm current terms on the product listing before you buy.

Is the Adobe and Mylio software bundle worth anything?

You get a one-year Mylio Create subscription and a two-month Adobe Creative Cloud Photography Plan membership. Both are introductory terms and renew at normal subscription pricing after they lapse.
