✓ AX5700 dual-band WiFi 6 with 160MHz channels, rated up to 5700 Mbps
✓ 2.5 Gbps wired port plus dual-WAN aggregation for true 2 Gbps service

✓ AiProtection Pro by Trend Micro and Instant Guard VPN, subscription-free

Cons

✗ Dual-band only, with no 6 GHz band for WiFi 6E or WiFi 7 clients

Manufacturer description

The ASUS RT-AX86U is a dual-band WiFi 6 gaming router built around AX5700 speeds, rated up to 5700 Mbps combined when 160MHz channels and 802.11ax clients are in play. If your internet plan has outgrown gigabit, this router keeps up: it aggregates dual WAN connections for a true 2 Gbps link and adds a 2.5 Gbps wired port for a NAS, a switch, or your main gaming PC. The gaming feature set is the reason to pick this ASUS over a generic router. Mobile Game Mode prioritizes phone traffic with one tap in the ASUS Router app, and a dedicated gaming port puts a wired console or desktop at the front…

SpecPicks Verdict

SpecPicks scored ASUS RT-AX86U Dual Band WiFi 6 Extendable Gaming Router using a rating × review-volume × price-fit model applied to published specs and reviews across the networking category. ASUS's networking lineup sits within the broader category mid-tier; price and specs are the deciding factors over brand loyalty here. Judge it on the specification table and the price rather than on sentiment: check the figures that decide your use case, then put it side-by-side with two or three close alternatives in the Compare tool before clicking through.

Common buyer scenarios for networking of this kind: matching it to an existing build, replacing a failing part, or upgrading from a previous-generation equivalent. Check the spec table below against your current setup — particularly socket / form-factor / power-rating fields — and confirm compatibility on the retailer's listing before purchase. Frequently Asked Questions

How fast is the ASUS RT-AX86U?

It is rated up to 5700 Mbps combined across both bands using WiFi 6 (802.11ax) with 160MHz channels. Real-world speed per device is lower and depends on your client adapter, distance, and channel congestion.

Can the RT-AX86U handle a 2 Gbps internet plan?

Yes. It supports up to a 2 Gbps internet connection through aggregated dual-WAN connections, and it includes a 2.5 Gbps wired port so one multi-gig device can use that headroom.

Do the security features require a subscription?

No. AiProtection Pro, powered by Trend Micro, is subscription-free network security, and Instant Guard provides a one-click shareable VPN for use away from home.

Can I add more routers later for better coverage?

Yes. The RT-AX86U is AiMesh compatible, so adding any AiMesh-compatible ASUS router extends the same network with seamless roaming instead of creating a separate SSID.

Is the RT-AX86U a good pick for gaming?

It is built for it: a dedicated gaming port for a wired console or PC, plus Mobile Game Mode that reduces lag for phone gaming with one tap in the ASUS Router app.
