What to look for in games & cartridges

Three things decide whether a cartridge you buy will play, and none of them is your PC build. First, platform and region: a cartridge is cut for one console generation and usually one region — NTSC-U (North America), PAL (Europe/Australia) and NTSC-J (Japan) carts are keyed differently on most 8- and 16-bit hardware, and a PAL title on an NTSC console runs at the wrong speed even when it fits. SNES and N64 use physical cartridge-slot keying; Game Boy and DS are region-free; PS1 and PS2 discs are region-locked in software. Check the region before the price. Second, condition grade, because it is what you are actually paying for: "loose" is the cartridge alone, "CIB" is complete-in-box with manual and inserts, "sealed" is factory-shrinkwrapped and priced as a collectible rather than a game. A loose copy plays identically to a $400 sealed one — if you want to play it, buy loose and spend the difference on more games. For sealed listings, prefer a grading-company slab (WATA, VGA) over a seller's own photo; unslabbed "sealed" is the most-resealed category in the hobby. Third, authenticity: reproduction cartridges are common for expensive titles and for fan translations that were never released commercially. A repro is a legitimate way to play a $600 game for $35 and many are well made, but it should be priced as a repro — check the label print quality, the PCB through the shell vents, and whether the seller says so up front. Save batteries in Zelda- and Pokémon-era carts are 25+ years old and are a $3 CR2032 replacement, not a reason to reject a listing. Finally, on price: use the recent-sold-listings history, not the asking price, and separate the game's value from the packaging's — for most titles the gap between loose and CIB is the entire premium.
