Pros & Cons

Pros

  • ✓ Bundled Acronis True Image adds scheduled backups plus ransomware defense
  • ✓ Password protection with hardware encryption, not software-only locking
  • ✓ USB 3.1 with USB 3.0 backward compatibility, no adapter or hub needed
  • ✓ 3-year limited warranty on a pocketable drive that travels in a laptop sleeve

Cons

  • ✗ 1TB fills fast with 4K footage or RAW photo libraries
  • ✗ Spinning platter drive, so it is slower and less shock-tolerant than an SSD
  • ✗ Acronis backup software is Windows-focused; Mac users often reformat and use Time Machine
  • ✗ No USB-C connector on the drive itself, so newer laptops need a dongle

SpecPicks Verdict

SpecPicks scored Western Digital WD 1TB My Passport using a rating × review-volume × price-fit model applied to published specs and reviews across the external storage category. Western Digital's external storage lineup sits within the broader category mid-tier; price and specs are the deciding factors over brand loyalty here. Judge it on the specification table and the price rather than on sentiment: check the figures that decide your use case, then put it side-by-side with two or three close alternatives in the Compare tool before clicking through.

Common buyer scenarios for external storage of this kind: matching it to an existing build, replacing a failing part, or upgrading from a previous-generation equivalent. Check the spec table below against your current setup — particularly socket / form-factor / power-rating fields — and confirm compatibility on the retailer's listing before purchase. Frequently Asked Questions

How much data actually fits on the WD 1TB My Passport?

It ships as a 1TB drive, which holds roughly 200,000 photos or 250 hours of HD video depending on file size and compression. If you shoot 4K or store large game libraries, the My Passport line goes up to 6TB.

Does the My Passport work with a Mac?

It connects over USB 3.1 and is backward compatible with USB 3.0, so it will mount on a Mac. The included Acronis True Image for Western Digital backup software is the Windows-side tool; many Mac owners reformat the drive and use Time Machine instead. Check the product listing for current macOS compatibility.

How does the ransomware protection work?

Western Digital includes Acronis True Image for Western Digital, a device management and backup utility with built-in defense against ransomware. It backs your files up on a schedule so an encrypted copy on your PC does not mean the data is gone.

Is the password protection real encryption or just a software lock?

Western Digital pairs password protection with hardware encryption on the drive itself, so the contents stay unreadable without the password rather than relying on a software prompt alone.

What warranty comes with this drive?

Western Digital lists a 3-year limited warranty on the My Passport. Check the product listing for current terms and regional coverage before you buy.
