Pros & Cons

Pros

✓ 256-bit hardware encryption plus password protection built into the drive itself
✓ Automatic backup software covers both local and cloud destinations
✓ Machined aluminum radial-spin shell resists scuffs better than plastic portable drives
✓ 3-year limited warranty, longer than the 1-2 years many portables carry

Cons

✗ Ships Windows-formatted; Mac users must reformat before first use
✗ Reformatting for Mac can break the bundled WD backup software workflow
✗ 1TB ceiling fills fast with 4K video or large game libraries
✗ USB 3.0, not USB-C or Thunderbolt, so newer laptops need an adapter

Manufacturer description

The WD My Passport Ultra Metal Edition packs 1TB of portable storage behind a machined aluminum shell with a radial-spin finish, so it looks at home next to a laptop instead of buried in a bag pocket. Western Digital pairs that design with real data protection: 256-bit hardware encryption and password protection lock down every photo, video, music file, and document you copy across, and the bundled backup software handles automatic local and cloud backups on a schedule you set. USB 3.0 connectivity keeps transfers of large photo libraries and video projects moving without the bus-limited…

SpecPicks Verdict

SpecPicks scored WD 1TB Silver My Passport Ultra Edition Portable External Hard Drive using a rating × review-volume × price-fit model applied to published specs and reviews across the external storage category. Western Digital's external storage lineup sits within the broader category mid-tier; price and specs are the deciding factors over brand loyalty here. Judge it on the specification table and the price rather than on sentiment: check the figures that decide your use case, then put it side-by-side with two or three close alternatives in the Compare tool before clicking through.

Common buyer scenarios for external storage of this kind: matching it to an existing build, replacing a failing part, or upgrading from a previous-generation equivalent. Check the spec table below against your current setup — particularly socket / form-factor / power-rating fields — and confirm compatibility on the retailer's listing before purchase. Frequently Asked Questions

Does the WD My Passport Ultra work with a Mac?

It works with a Mac, but not out of the box. WD ships this drive formatted for Windows, so Mac users need to reformat it first; refer to WD's Application Guide for the reformatting steps.

How much storage does this My Passport Ultra hold?

This model is the 1TB capacity (part number WDBTYH0010BSL-NESN), enough for a large photo and document library or a full system backup of most laptops.

Is the data on this drive actually encrypted?

Yes. The drive includes 256-bit hardware encryption plus password protection, so files stay locked to your password rather than relying on software-only protection.

What warranty does Western Digital include?

Western Digital covers this drive with a 3-year limited warranty. Check the product listing for current terms and regional coverage before you buy.

Does it need a separate power adapter?

No. It connects and draws power over a single USB 3.0 cable, so there is no AC brick to pack. USB 3.0 also means faster transfers than a USB 2.0 drive on a USB 3.0 port.
