SpecPicks Verdict

SpecPicks scored WD 1TB Berry My Passport Ultra Portable External Hard Drive using a rating × review-volume × price-fit model applied to published specs and reviews across the external storage category. Western Digital's external storage lineup sits within the broader category mid-tier; price and specs are the deciding factors over brand loyalty here. Judge it on the specification table and the price rather than on sentiment: check the figures that decide your use case, then put it side-by-side with two or three close alternatives in the Compare tool before clicking through.

Common buyer scenarios for external storage of this kind: matching it to an existing build, replacing a failing part, or upgrading from a previous-generation equivalent. Check the spec table below against your current setup — particularly socket / form-factor / power-rating fields — and confirm compatibility on the retailer's listing before purchase. Frequently Asked Questions

Does the WD My Passport Ultra work with a Mac?

Yes, but only after you reformat it. The drive ships formatted for Windows, and Western Digital's Application Guide explains how to reformat it for macOS. Reformatting erases the drive, so do it before you copy any files on.

How does the password encryption work?

You can set an optional password, which turns on 256-bit AES hardware encryption. The drive then needs that password before anyone can read your files. Encryption stays off until you set a password.

What warranty comes with this drive?

Western Digital covers the My Passport Ultra with a 3-year limited warranty. Check Western Digital's warranty page for the exact terms and how to file a claim.

Can it back up my computer automatically?

Yes. The drive works with WD Backup software, which supports automatic local and cloud backup, so you can set a schedule and let it run.

How much storage does this model have, and how does it connect?

This model, WDBGPU0010BBY-NESN, holds 1TB and connects over USB 3.0. The My Passport Ultra line also comes in sizes up to 3TB if you need more space.
