SpecPicks Verdict

SpecPicks scored Samsung 980 PRO SSD 2TB PCIe NVMe Gen 4 Gaming M.2 Internal Solid… using a rating × review-volume × price-fit model applied to published specs and reviews across the ssds & storage category. Samsung's ssds & storage lineup sits within the broader category mid-tier; price and specs are the deciding factors over brand loyalty here. Judge it on the specification table and the price rather than on sentiment: check the figures that decide your use case, then put it side-by-side with two or three close alternatives in the Compare tool before clicking through.

Common buyer scenarios for ssds & storage of this kind: matching it to an existing build, replacing a failing part, or upgrading from a previous-generation equivalent. Frequently Asked Questions

How fast is the Samsung 980 PRO 2TB?

Samsung rates sequential read speeds at up to 7,000 MB/s over PCIe 4.0. That is about 2x a PCIe 3.0 NVMe drive and roughly 12x a Samsung SATA SSD, per the manufacturer's specs.

Will the 980 PRO work in a PCIe 3.0 motherboard?

Yes. The 980 PRO is backward compatible with PCIe 3.0, though it will run at Gen 3 speeds rather than the full 7,000 MB/s until you move it to a PCIe 4.0 slot.

Does the 980 PRO need a heatsink?

This SKU has no separate heatsink. Samsung uses a nickel coating on the controller and a heat-spreader label on the NAND for thermal control. Many PCIe 4.0 motherboards also include an M.2 heatsink.

What size M.2 slot does it fit?

It is a standard M.2 2280 drive, 80mm long, which fits most desktop motherboards and laptops with a full-length M.2 slot. Check your system for 2280 clearance before ordering.

Is the Samsung 980 PRO good for gaming?

Samsung positions it for hardcore gamers, and the 7,000 MB/s read ceiling cuts level-load times. The 2TB capacity leaves room for a large installed library.

Key Features
