SpecPicks Verdict

SpecPicks scored Seagate Backup Plus Portable 4TB External Hard Drive HDD using a rating × review-volume × price-fit model applied to published specs and reviews across the external storage category. Seagate's external storage lineup sits within the broader category mid-tier; price and specs are the deciding factors over brand loyalty here. Judge it on the specification table and the price rather than on sentiment: check the figures that decide your use case, then put it side-by-side with two or three close alternatives in the Compare tool before clicking through.

Common buyer scenarios for external storage of this kind: matching it to an existing build, replacing a failing part, or upgrading from a previous-generation equivalent. Check the spec table below against your current setup — particularly socket / form-factor / power-rating fields — and confirm compatibility on the retailer's listing before purchase. Prices and stock are set by the retailer and may have moved since this page was last updated.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this drive work with a Mac and Time Machine?

Yes. It connects to both PC and Mac over the included USB 3.0 cable, but Seagate notes that reformatting may be required before you can use it with Time Machine.

Do I need a separate power adapter?

No. The Backup Plus Portable draws power over the single included USB 3.0 cable, so there is no wall brick to carry.

How much of the 4TB can I actually use?

Slightly less than 4TB. Seagate states that available storage capacity may vary, since formatting and the bundled software consume part of the raw capacity.

What kind of warranty comes with it?

Seagate includes a two-year limited warranty. Check the product listing for the current terms and registration details in your region.

Is the Adobe Creative Cloud offer really included?

Yes. The drive ships with a complimentary two-month membership to the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography Plan for photo and video editing apps.

Can I schedule backups instead of running them manually?

Yes. The free Seagate software backs up with a single click or on an automatic daily, weekly, or monthly schedule you set once.
