Manufacturer description

The WD My Passport Ultra 2TB gives you a pocket-sized backup drive that doesn't look like an afterthought, pairing a metal top plate with a matte body. Two terabytes covers years of photo libraries, 4K clips, project files, and game captures without you having to prune anything first. Connect it over USB 3.0 for fast transfers, or plug it into an older USB 2.0 machine and it still works. The bundled WD Discovery software handles the parts most people skip: scheduled WD Backup runs, password protection for the drive, and importing content straight from social media and cloud storage accounts…

SpecPicks Verdict

SpecPicks scored Western Digital WD 2TB My Passport Ultra Portable External Hard Drive using a rating × review-volume × price-fit model applied to published specs and reviews across the external storage category. Western Digital's external storage lineup sits within the broader category mid-tier; price and specs are the deciding factors over brand loyalty here. Judge it on the specification table and the price rather than on sentiment: check the figures that decide your use case, then put it side-by-side with two or three close alternatives in the Compare tool before clicking through.

Common buyer scenarios for external storage of this kind: matching it to an existing build, replacing a failing part, or upgrading from a previous-generation equivalent. Check the spec table below against your current setup — particularly socket / form-factor / power-rating fields — and confirm compatibility on the retailer's listing before purchase. Prices and stock are set by the retailer and may have moved since this page was last updated.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much can the WD My Passport Ultra 2TB actually hold?

It is a 2TB drive, which comfortably covers large photo libraries, HD and 4K video projects, and full laptop backups. Usable capacity is slightly under 2TB after formatting, as with any drive.

Does it work with older computers that only have USB 2.0?

Yes. The drive uses a USB 3.0 port and is USB 2.0 compatible, so it connects to older machines, though transfers run at USB 2.0 speeds on those ports.

Can I password protect the files on this drive?

Yes. The included WD Discovery software provides password protection, along with WD Backup and import tools for social media and cloud storage accounts.

What warranty does Western Digital include?

Western Digital lists a 3-year limited warranty on this My Passport Ultra. Check the product listing for current terms and regional coverage before you buy.

Why does the listing say Old Generation?

This is an earlier revision of the My Passport Ultra line rather than the latest model. It still carries 2TB, USB 3.0, and WD Discovery software.
