Pros & Cons

Pros

  • ✓ Ships as a complete 16TB bundle: DS223j plus 2x 8TB Seagate IronWolf NAS drives
  • ✓ Quad-core Realtek RTD1619B at 1.7 GHz handles file serving and DSM apps
  • ✓ Synology DSM builds a private cloud for remote file and media access
  • ✓ Built-in surveillance tools let you store security camera footage locally
  • ✓ Two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports for external backup drives or expansion

Cons

  • ✗ Only 1 GB DDR4 non-ECC memory, and it is not user-upgradable on this model
  • ✗ Single 1GbE RJ-45 port caps transfers near 110 MB/s for multi-user loads
  • ✗ Non-ECC RAM means no memory error correction for critical archives
  • ✗ Two bays only, so RAID 1 mirroring leaves just 8TB of usable capacity

SpecPicks Verdict

SpecPicks scored Synology DS223j 2-Bay Diskstation NAS 16TB Bundle using a rating × review-volume × price-fit model applied to published specs and reviews across the external storage category. Synology's external storage lineup sits within the broader category mid-tier; price and specs are the deciding factors over brand loyalty here.
